High-Protein Tofu Hummus
Creamy bean-free hummus with tofu and plenty of tahini, lemon, and garlic for a low-carb dip that’s especially high in plant-based protein.

This high-protein tofu hummus is creamy, garlicky, and generously flavored with tahini and lemon, with tofu providing a low-carb alternative to the beans traditionally used in hummus. I consume a lot of hummus, and veggie sticks with hummus are one of my favorite easy go-to snacks. My favorite is still the Soybean Hummus from my books, which can also be made with lupini beans to keep it low-carb or, for a higher-carb version, chickpeas. The problem is that soybeans and lupini beans aren’t particularly easy to find everywhere, and I’ve also noticed surprisingly large differences in the listed net carbs of canned and jarred products. Tofu, on the other hand, is widely available and has excellent macros for a vegan keto diet, so it seemed like an obvious ingredient to try.

Along with the tofu, I use a generous amount of tahini, plus lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, cumin, and a little nutritional yeast. I also add plain protein powder to boost the protein further, bringing each serving to around 8g protein and just 1.5g net carbs. I tested the hummus both with and without it, though, and liked it either way. Without the protein powder, it’s a little thinner and provides around 6g protein per serving. I also like adding just a touch of sweetener to round out some of the bitterness from the tahini, but that’s entirely optional. You can leave it out initially, taste the finished hummus, and add some only if you think it needs it.

Most often, I scoop this up with low-carb vegetables such as celery, cucumber, or green bell pepper, but it also works well for adding both protein and flavor to wraps, salads, or cauliflower rice bowls. And if tofu isn’t an option or you’re simply in the mood for a bean-based hummus, try my Toasted Pumpkin Seed Hummus or the Soybean Hummus and its variations in my books instead.

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients, apart from the protein powder, in a high-powered blender and blend to smooth. You may need to use a tamper to keep the mixture moving.
  2. Add the protein powder and blend to smooth. If the mixture is unable to blend, or if you prefer your hummus to be thinner/lighter, add a splash of water or plant milk.
  3. If time allows, refrigerate for about an hour to allow flavors to meld.
  4. Enjoy as you would typically use hummus.

Notes

  • In North America, the weight on tofu packages is pressed weight. I'm not sure if this is the case worldwide. I find that a 12-ounce (340g) block of unpressed tofu weighs about 420g. If you're buying bulk tofu, or your packaging gives unpressed weight, use 420g unpressed tofu in this recipe.
  • I find that just a touch of sweetener rounded out the bitterness of the tahini in this recipe. However, it's not at all necessary if you prefer not to use it. You could omit it initially and add it in at the end if you want to adjust the flavor.
  • I tried this recipe before and after adding the protein powder, and it was good either way. Without the protein powder, the dip is a bit thinner. If the protein powder is omitted, the protein content is reduced to 6g per serving.
  • Macros for this recipe are calculated with American national nutritional data (i.e., NCCDB & USDA entries in Cronometer) for all ingredients apart from the tofu (House Foods), nutritional yeast flakes (a mixture of Bob's Red Mill and Foods Alive unfortified), and the protein powder (pea, Now Foods).
  • Macro numbers are rounded. Numbers equal to or greater than 10g are rounded to the nearest whole number (e.g. 10g, 11g, 12g, etc.) and numbers below 10g are rounded to the nearest 0.5g (0.5g, 1g, 1.5g ... 9g, 9.5g). Any numbers below 0.5g are given as is (e.g. 0.1g, 0.2g, etc.). Calories are rounded to the nearest multiple of 5.

What happened?

On July 4th, Weebly (my hosting platform) informed me that it was removing its services in my region and that my website would be unpublished as of September 27th. Fortunately, I had already been working on this new site and could have it finished by then. However, on July 15th, Weebly cancelled my subscription and notified me that my website would be unpublished imminently. I decided the best course of action was to transfer the domain name (www.keto4vegans.com) to my new unfinished site rather than have you encounter an error page and not have access to any of my content.

Most of the content from my original site is already available here, and I’m working hard to redirect links, revise formatting, and add all the data needed for the new site’s fancy features to function at their full capacity.

Thank you for your patience while I revise content and work through the kinks.
